This summer, don’t get caught by The Mash’s fashion police! Follow these tips to help you become fashion-savvy.

GIRLS

Instead of: A maxi skirt
Try: A mullet-hem skirt

High-low hemmed skirts are the trendy combination of maxi- and mini-skirts that make legs look long and lean without being too revealing. A floor-length maxi skirt tends to look dowdy and can be unflattering on shorter girls, while mullet skirts look nice no matter what size you are. Pair a patterned one with a slouchy boyfriend tee or pair a bright-colored one with a cropped cardigan. Topshop and Forever 21 carry styles in a variety of prints and hues.

Instead of: Jean cutoffs
Try: Colored denim capris or shorts

Ditch boring jean cutoffs with Daisy Duke fringes and opt for a more polished, colorful option this summer. Jewel-toned bottoms in cobalt, emerald, jade and garnet are statement-making, while petal hues such as mint and baby pink look great with neutral tops and leather accessories. Feeling even more bold? Neon jeans and a patterned top scream confidence. Urban Outfitters carries denim lines such as BDG and Rich & Skinny with jeans in nearly every color of  the rainbow.

Instead of: A statement necklace/bracelet/ring
Try: Stacked jewelry

Accessories help bring an outfit together, but instead of having your ensemble revolve around one piece of jewelry, try layering on as much as you want! Stack leather or beaded bracelets, wear two or three pendant necklaces or sport a fistful of rings for a fun summer look. Francesca’s Collections has adorable jewelry with prices so low, you won’t be able to help but buy a handful.

GUYS

Instead of: A plaid button-down
Try: A three-quarter sleeved tee

Plaid button-downs tend to be too thick for summer in the city. A light baseball tee with sleeves reaching just past your elbows paired with cargo shorts looks put together without looking like you’re trying. Old Navy and American Eagle’s raglan tees range from basic to printed and aren’t pricey at all.

Instead of: Jean cutoffs
Try: Colored denim cutoffs

Don’t think you can’t work the colored cutoff trend too, gentlemen! Shades such as dark blue, red and green cuffed just above the knee are a great alternative to denim shorts and are just as versatile. Whatever your favorite color may be, you’ll most likely find a corresponding pair of cutoffs at Urban Outfitters.

Instead of: Plain T-shirts
Try: Printed tank tops

Sporting a fun tank top to the beach shows you’re all about style and creativity without going overboard. Threadless has plenty of unique styles that are sure to be conversation starters.
