The Mash

It looks like the summer movie hype for 2013 is in full effect. The cinematic offerings seem to have everything from super heroes to giant robots. Though two films in particular stand out not only for their all-star casts, but also because they have oddly similar plots. Take a look at the trailers for “Oblivion” and “After Earth” and judge for yourselves.

“Oblivion”

Genre: Action, Adventure, Sci-Fi

Plot: Tom Cruise stars as Jack Harper, a drone repairmen stationed on a now nearly vacant Earth. During his mission to extract resources from the war-ravaged planet, he rescues a stranger from a downed spacecraft. This triggers a series of events that makes him question everything he knows and puts the fate of humanity in his hands.

“After Earth”

Release Date: June 7, 2013
Director: M. Night Shyamalan (Really?)
Starring: Will Smith, Jaden Smith
Genre: Sci-Fi

Plot: A  father and son crash land on Earth 1,000 years after humans have evacuated the planet. With Cypher (Will Smith) injured, Kitai (Jaden Smith) must find a way to signal for help, while enduring uncharted terrain, fending off dangerous, evolved animals, and battling an alien threat that escaped during the crash. Both Cypher and Kitai must work together to not only survive, but find a way home.
