This action-packed blockbuster introduces a new team of heroes, the Guardians of the Galaxy, while maintaining the Marvel standards: lots of thrills, laughs and CGI.

Peter Quill (played by Chris Pratt) leads this unlikely criminal team with Groot (a humanoid tree voiced by Vin Diesel), Rocket (a gun-toting raccoon voiced by Bradley Cooper), revenge-driven Drax (played by Dave Bautista) and Gamora (played by Zoe Saldana). Unlike “The Avengers,” this squad forms in prison, which doesn’t make them your usual heroic material.

Quill has to run a tight ship with his new team to stop Ronan (played by Lee Pace) from destroying a civilization and taking over the universe, which is quite a feat no matter who you are.

Visually, the movie felt like something from “Star Wars,” and some of the actions scenes were reminiscent of “Star Trek.” There were very few scenes that took place on Earth—or even in our galaxy—which added to the special effects in a good way. Plus, the music selection was on-point and included artists like Jackson 5, David Bowie, Raspberries and Blue Swede. Everything ties together nicely.

With a few slow scenes, the comical banter really keeps things moving. This movie is great for all audiences, and I’m excited that there’s already another “Guardians” flick on the books.
