May 24, 2012
The month of May is a splendid month for sports fans. We’re in the thick of exciting basketball and hockey playoffs while baseball is in full swing. There isn’t a better time for sports fans to enjoy what they love most.
But this year, May sucks.
The Bulls fell apart in the first round of the NBA playoffs after star guard Derrick Rose crumbled with an ACL tear. On the ice, the Blackhawks couldn’t take down the Phoenix Coyotes in the first round of the NHL playoffs.
As for the Sox and Cubs, things aren’t looking good. The White Sox are hovering around .500 and the Cubs are yet again cellar dwellers. Things are so bad for Chicago baseball that last Friday, even with NATO officials and Hillary Clinton at Wrigley Field, the Crosstown Classic had its lowest attendance for one game since its inception.
That’s why I’m formally creating the Support Group For Chicago Sports Fans or SGFCSF. SGFCSF stands for the fans who are tired of seeing their team constantly ground out with men in scoring position.
It stands for the fans who told themselves that the Bulls could come back against the 76ers even though they had to play with an injured D-Rose and a suffering Joakim Noah. It stands for those who go to bed every night counting down the days until the Bears open up training camp.
SGFCSF is a group that all of us need. We can all come to meetings and talk about what pains us so much. We can also scoff at the towns that are even worse than ours, such as Cleveland.
I know you need that support. All of you do. So please join me.
SGFCSF will be the right choice for you.
Game of the week
Boys baseball regionals
The teams will be determined, but boys baseball regional championships all occur on Saturday. The sectional semifinals take place on Wednesday. Don’t be surprised if Mount Carmel and Plainfield North come out with dominant performances.
Sports story of the week
Sometimes being a devoted fan pays off.
It did for 12-year-old Patrick Gonzalez, who shaved his favorite Spurs player, Matt Bonner, into his hair. Although Gonzalez got suspended from school for the hairdo, he did land free Spurs tickets and gifts from Bonner, who was honored that Gonzalez would do such a thing.
