Danny McBride in “Eastbound and Down.”
REVIEW

‘Eastbound and Down’

HBO, Season 1 DVD, available June 30

The first season of this show has now ended. What can I say? It was an awesome show. It stars Danny McBride who played the invincible Red in “Pineapple Express” and had roles in films such as “Tropic Thunder” and “Hot Rod.”

One of McBride’s first films, “The Foot Fist Way,” has a large cult status and was directed by Jody Hill. Hill is known for his deadpan, dark comedies, and he has been friends with McBride for quite some time. They also teamed up to produce this show, which is about a washed-up baseball player named Kenny Powers who moves into his brother’s home. He gets a job as a gym teacher at a local school where his old girlfriend works as a teacher. He tries to win her away from her boyfriend—the geeky school principal—all while attempting a baseball comeback with the help of his dorky new assistant (brilliantly played by Steve Little). I can’t wait for the next season to start so I can get more of Kenny Powers and his extremely large ego.

How would that alligator spotted in the Chicago River explain why he's here?

'Hey, can't an alligator be a tourist, too?'
'You try navigating to Florida without a GPS.'
'I came to bite Blago.'
'As an avid meat-lover, I came for the hot dogs.'
