Should schools ban skinny jeans? (Getty Images photo)
MY LIFE

Baggy bans gone skinny

Exactly one year ago around this time of year, I remember reading stories about state laws banning baggy pants below the waistline. Someone even came up with the clever motto, “Pull Them Up or Pay Up”.

Sounds kind of like “Click It or Ticket,” doesn’t it? I also remember reading about several "juvenile delinquents" who decided to keep their pants below the indicated line anyway and were sent to prison for it in Florida.

Last year, baggy jeans weren’t exactly on Elle’s magazine cover, but they were fashionable in other terms. According to timefreepress.com, the baggy pants originated from urban fashion and hip-hop clothing rappers brought to the stage.

This year, skinny jeans are inspired by fashion models. According to the Dallas Morning News, half a decade ago models and their rocker boyfriends gave rise to the skinny jeans.

It’s funny how it’s fall again and this time anti-baggy laws have gone anti-skinny. Schools in Texas are banning skinny jeans and any student wearing tapered skinny jeans will be sent to the office and upon refusing to change, sent home.

Some students in Texas have even been recorded as retreating from schools and turning towards home schooling because of such restrictions on clothing.

The rational side of me tells me that it’s all for the best. No one wants to see butt cracks with extremely tapered and low-cut skinny jeans or boxers with baggy pants. Yet, in the back of my head, I can’t help but wonder: Are these bans out to get us?

I could never imagine myself wearing baggy pants. However, I am a person to wear regular skinny jeans. I just can’t imagine getting punished for something like that.

Recently, fashion has gone even skinnier by using leggings as dress pants. While a year ago leggings and a shirt were a huge fashion faux pas, they have entered the world of fashion. Elle magazine supports the trend and so does Forever 21, and schools do not seem to have a problem with that style (so far).

The awkward turtle knows what to be thankful for this Thanksgiving. Not so much baggy pants, but definitely the ability to wear skinny jeans freely at her school. At least I know banning skinny jeans would wipe out half of my wardrobe. And no one wants to spend a heap of money on clothes you don’t like. After all, we are in recession.

Coffee or tea?

Coffee. Black.
Coffee, but with all the fixings...
Tea. All the caffeine, way better for you.
If it has caffeine, I'll drink it.
Don't you know about all the chemicals in there?!
