I'm more familiar with the summer Olympics, and the winter games are like a whole new world for me. Coming from an area where the largest hill is the equivalent of a Canadian bunny hill, I'm not exactly the world's greatest winter games connoisseur. As an athlete though, I was absolutely inspired to do something great.
Take figure skating. I couldn't even imagine skating in front of the world if my mom had died only a few days before. I was inspired by how Joannie Rochette came to practice and competed even though she was devastated by her mom's death. It makes me remember what sports and the Olympics are all about. As a new hockey supporter for Team USA, I wasn't exactly cheering for the Canadians. But I wanted more than anything for Joannie to get the gold.
These games unite us globally better than anything ever has. And it's comforting to know that the people responsible are just regular people that have worked hard to be their best.
