The Grammy awards are coming up in a few weeks.

2016 was a year filled with great music and rising stars. It was also a year for some veterans in the music industry to really showcase their musical talents. Here are some of my predictions on who will win.

Album of the Year

And the nominees are…

  1. “25” – Adele
  2. “Purpose” – Justin Bieber
  3. “Views” – Drake
  4. “Lemonade” – Beyonce
  5. “A Sailor’s Guide to the Earth” – Sturgill Simpson

Right off the bat, I think Simpson’s album will not win. Even though “In Bloom” and “Brace for Impact” were (very) good songs, he is mainly a country singer. A majority of people do not really enjoy listening to country music. So, I am afraid he’s out.

The same thing goes for JB. The album did have good songs like, “Where Are You Now”, “Purpose”, “Love Yourself”, “Sorry”, and “What Do You Mean”, but he’s still pretty young  compared to the other nominated artists. Through this album, he showed something new. “Purpose” and “Love Yourself” were two songs that showed the beginning of a new career for Justin.

And then there were three. Drake and Adele both had good songs that were consistently on the top charts. Both artists have also won Album of the Year in the past years. Due to this fact, I think Beyonce’s “Lemonade” will win. It was definitely her breakthrough album.

Final Prediction: Beyonce’s “Lemonade”

Best New Artist

The nominees are…

  1. Maren Morris
  2. The Chainsmokers
  3. Kelsea Ballerini
  4. Chance the Rapper
  5. Anderson Paak

Despite Morris’s high top charts rankings, I don’t think she will win. Even though her songs, “My Church” and “80s Mercedes” have done really well, she is a country singer. I think Morris has potential, especially since she is defying the way that people look at country/rock music. Maybe next year.

The Chainsmokers probably have the highest chance of getting this nomination. Remember that annoying song that came out a few years ago, “Selfie”? Well guess what, The Chainsmokers made that song. Their EP’s “Collage” and “Bouquet” have done extremely well on the charts, and their latest single “Paris” is slowly becoming everyone’s favorite.

Straight out of Tennessee, Kelsea Ballerini is another country – pop singer that wants to make it big in Hollywood. “The First Time”, her first album did relatively well, but she still has a long way to go. Although “Peter Pan” and “Dibs” are very catchy songs, they are probably more popular among the younger generation, maybe pre – teens.

Chicago’s own, Chance the Rapper is definitely someone to root for.  Throughout his album, “Coloring Book”, he has collaborated with Kanye West, Lil’ Wayne, and Justin Bieber, and many others. His music is an unexpected combination of rap, hip – hop, and a touch of gospel. He definitely has a chance to win Best New Artist, and possibly the Best Rap Album of the Year.

Anderson Paak, who has a very similar style to Chance the Rapper, also has a very high chance to win this. His music is a lot more groovy, and has a more 70’s/80’s feel, which is really different when comparing it to other music and rap songs in this era. Songs like “Am I Wrong” and “Come Down” have definitely put him down as one of the greats.

Final Prediction: The Chainsmokers

Song of the Year

  1. “Formation” – Beyonce
  2. “Hello” – Adele
  3. “I Took a Pill in Ibiza” – Mike Posner
  4. “Love Yourself” – Justin Bieber
  5. 7 Years – Lukas Graham

Queen Bey, back at it again with another nomination. If Beyonce wins album of the year, it is pretty likely that she could also win Song of the Year. This is her third nomination for Song of the Year. She was nominated for “Say My Name” and “Single Ladies”, in which she won the title. We’ll see how it plays out.

Adele’s “Hello” is probably the most popular song of her album, “25”. I really think that this win could also be based on who wins Album of the Year. These two categories are really just a showdown between Beyonce and Adele. Both of them are powerful female singers and have a great range. They continuously produce chart toppers and never fail to surprise people.

Before “I Took a Pill in Ibiza,” Mike Posner took a little break from the music industry. This song definitely made his comeback a big one. I’m not sure, if his this song is worth a Grammy, but it’s a good song to add to your party playlist.

Even though Justin Bieber is in the running for Album of the Year, it’s very unlikely that “Love Yourself” will win. He still has a long career ahead, and I don’t consider his song to be his best one yet.

Breakout artist, Lukas Graham, from Copenhagen, Denmark, made one of the most popular songs of 2016. It’s pretty crazy to think that this is only the beginning of a huge career for Graham. I’m not sure if he will win Song of the Year, but I definitely think Best Pop Duo/Group Performance is a possibility.

Final Prediction: Adele’s “Hello”

Best Pop Duo/Group Performance

  1. “Work” – Rihanna, Drake
  2. “Closer” – The Chainsmokers, Halsey
  3. “Cheap Thrills” – Sia, Sean Paul
  4. “7 Years” – Lukas Graham
  5. “Stressed Out” – Twenty One Pilots

When it comes to modern – day music, the duo that most people think of is Rihanna and Drake. They definitely put a lot of work into this song. Their collaborations have been nothing but a success. This song definitely has a shot, at winning this category.

When “Closer” first came out, it was a hit. Again, I’m not sure if the song is really Grammy – worthy. The Chainsmokers still have some time to win awards, since they have just started out their career. There is no doubt that they will receive a Grammy, at some other point in their career.

Even though Sean Paul and Sia did a very good job with “Cheap Thrills”, this song never reached it’s maximum potential. The song did consistently place in the top charts, but it never stayed at a high ranking (like at the top song, or within the top five songs). I don’t think this song will end up winning this award.

With Lukas Graham being a breakout star, the Recording Academy could see this as a good time to give out this kind of award. I assume he performed this song, “7 Years” with his Danish band.

Twenty One Pilots is another very popular band among the younger generation. Their music is very unique, compared to other artists in this era.

Final Prediction: 7 Years – Lukas Graham

Tune in to see some of these musicians get honored for their great talents, at 5:00pm PST on February 12th!
